The message below was received from Dr Roe Froman of the Van Andel Research Institute, regarding a registry for Canine Cancer.  I urge any of you with Cockers that have cancer to take part in this study/survey.  With enough samples, the researchers might be able to isolate the causes of cancer and start working on prevention/cure.
I am passing this message on as ASC-F Communications Chair.  Part of the ASC Foundation's role is to further research into health issues affecting our Flushing Spaniels.  This particular survey will not cost the ASC-F any money, but has the potential to further our knowledge of Cocker Spaniels and cancer.
"The CHCC is enrolling cockers who have melanoma in our studies currently.  The Van Andel Research Institute and TGen are studying the DNA of dogs who develop cancer compared to that of dogs without the disease.  Since cockers seem to suffer from a particularly virulent form of melanoma in many instances, we would like to include them in our studies.

The goal of this research is to look for genetic markers and to better  understand the biochemical pathways of the tumors themselves.  This will enable the development of improved diagnostics and more individualized therapies for dogs as well as people. "
If you have a cocker (or an English cocker, or other purebred dog with melanoma),  enroll your dog easily online at http://www.tgen.org/research/canine-hcc-frm.cfm.
Alternatively, you may also contact Dr. Roe Froman, at the Van Andel Research Institute, for information about how to enroll your dog in these most important studies.
