Sarah
2009 Recipient
This year’s recipient of the Michael Allen Veterinary Student Scholarship is Ms. Sarah Lehman of Churchville, PA.   Sarah is a second year Veterinary student at the University of Pennsylvania and expects to graduate in 2012.  Prior to enrolling in Veterinary school, Sarah graduated cum laude with a Bachelor of Science degree from College of William & Mary.

Sarah impressed the selection committee with her academic achievements, her active participation in College Societies and Clubs and her dedication to purebred companion animals.  Sarah grew up with purebred dogs and has retained a strong interest in their health.  Last year, Sarah spent her summer working in the lab of Dr. Urs Giger at Penn; and of particular note was her research project, extending some of the research Dr. Giger conducted relating to hematological diseases in Cocker Spaniels.  Specifically Sarah worked on a project to determine the spread of the PFK enzyme mutation in Cocker Spaniels and to identify some of the unique features that make Cocker Spaniels vulnerable to develop IMHA.

Sarah’s attitude can best be summarized in her own words.  In her essay describing her summer experience Sarah stated “It is my hope that the results of my research this summer will be long lasting; that they will help clinicians with the current triage and treatment of PFK deficiency and IMHA cases, as well as benefit future generations of purebred dogs by producing and encouraging the use of specific genetic tests for these diseases.”

Upon graduation, Sarah plans on entering clinical practice as a Veterinarian.  It is an honor to reward Ms. Sarah Lehman with the 2009 Michael Allen Veterinarian Student Scholarship award.

The ASCF and the Michael Allen Veterinary Scholarship offered two scholarships for $2,500.00 each.
